The mercury glass trend will make your wedding shine!
Don’t you just love the look of mercury glass? The holiday 2012 season was filled with it, but I can see mercury glass adding sparkle and vintage elegance to weddings all year through. The silver tones go well with so many color schemes – soft pink, bright and bold jewel tones, or even an all-white wedding with silver accents.
The key to adding mercury glass to your wedding is to vary the size and shape of the items. Look for uniquely shaped vases in all sizes for ceremony and reception flowers, and group the vases together for floral and sparkle impact. Find candlesticks and candle pillars in a variety of shapes and sizes for massing together and adding throughout your event décor. And don’t forget to fill in with a multitude of mercury glass votive holders for tea light candles to create a romantic glow.
Having trouble finding mercury glass vases and candlesticks? Here’s a great tutorial for making your own DIY mercury glass from Katie’s Rose Cottage Designs Blog. Get your bridesmaids and friends together for a crafty afternoon and you’ll have lots of wedding décor elements at the end of it!
And be sure to introduce your silver sparkle wedding with a silver wedding invitation or one with a delicate, pewter design like my Woodland Flowers Wedding Invitation!
Enjoy the sparkle and shine!
Ask Jean: Do DIY invitations really save money?
Q: I’m trying to do my wedding on a strict budget. Can I save money by printing my invitations at home on my own computer and printer?
A: The wedding invitation you send is the first glimpse for guests of what your wedding day will be like. It also contains the details of who, what, where and when that are critical for your guests. You’ll want to be sure that you carefully put your best foot forward as you go down the invitation aisle.
While some brides are handy with computer skills, this is one area where you can rest assured that this is best left to professional printers. You’ll find that the cost of the supplies, plus your own time (and possibly frustration of trying to get things to turn out right) will be far more involved than purchasing your invitations.
Additionally, when you order invitations from a professional stationer, most have free assistance in the form of professional order consultants that can assist you with making sure that everything is spelled correctly and that you’re pleased with your final product.

3 DIY Wedding Favors
Are you looking to cut wedding costs without cutting corners? Try making your own wedding favors! Not only will you be saving money, but you’ll also be creating a personalized touch that shows your guests just how thankful you are that they could share in the joy of your big day.
Not sure where to start? We’ve made it easy with these three adorable, yet easy-to-make, DIY favors!
1. S’mores in a Jar
These delicious favors will make a great late-night snack for your wedding guests! Just try not to eat too many as you’re making them!
Materials: Golden Grahams cereal, miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips, brown sugar, quart-size Mason jars, ribbon to match your color scheme
Instructions: Fill up your Mason jar a third of the way with Golden Grahams cereal, another third of the way with miniature marshmallows, then top it off with chocolate chips. (A third of the jar is equal to 1½ cups.) Add ½ cup of brown sugar to the very top. Once you’ve layered all ingredients in the Mason jar, attach an instruction label that reads:
“Preheat oven to 350º F. Prepare a 9” square baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Pour contents of the jar along with ½ cup melted butter into the prepared baking dish and press firmly. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely. Cut into bars.”
Close the jar and tie a nice big bow around it using the ribbon. Your guests will definitely be wanting s’more of these s’mores!
2. Miniature Succulent Favors
Eco-friendly and easy to make, these miniature succulent favors can double as place cards saving you time AND money (love that)!
Materials: miniature succulents, potting soil, small Mason jars, ribbon, place cards
Instructions: Place a miniature succulent into a Mason jar and add potting soil until the jar is full. Thread ribbon through a place card (punch a hole in each top corner of the card) and tie it around the jar. Now you’ve got yourself some fabulous green wedding favors and reception décor!
3. “The Perfect Blend” Coffee Bags
Are you a total java addict? Then you’re going to absolutely love these coffee bean favor bags (which, by the way, are super cheap)!
Materials: mini burlap bags (You can make your own with this free pattern), coffee (try a wholesale store like Costco), free printable labels, double-sided tape
Instructions: Place coffee beans in a burlap bag until full. Draw the burlap bag closed and wrap your label (try printing on caramel cardstock for a nice look) around the bag and secure with the double-sided tape. Your guests will definitely appreciate this adorable and practical favor!
So do yourself a favor with these creative DIY ideas!
